Dignity has grown into a profound concept amidst the turmoil of war. In times of extreme hardship, not everyone finds it easy to act with dignity, especially when their own safety is at risk. It is precisely these individuals, often faced with unimaginable challenges, who remind us of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring strength that keeps our world standing. I had the privilege of knowing Roman Zahurskyi on a personal level, a truly remarkable individual. He grew up in the quaint village of Tetirka in the Zhytomyr region. Roman's journey began at the local lyceum, where his passion for sports, particularly football, shone brightly. He achieved several awards, showcasing his talent and dedication. However, it's heartwarming to see how his enthusiasm for sports often took precedence over academics, reflecting the vibrant spirit that defined him. After completing his education, he ventured abroad to work in construction, seeking new opportunities. It was during this time that he first heard about the heartbreaking onset of the full-scale invasion. At just twenty years old, he felt a deep sense of duty and love for his homeland, prompting him to return to Ukraine without a second thought. In December 2022, he answered the call to defend his country and joined the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade as a gunner-operator. There, he earned the call sign “Zlodii,” standing proud among his fellow defenders in a time of great need.
It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the tragic loss of Roman, who was killed on July 8, 2023, while bravely serving on a combat mission near the village of Novovodiane in the Luhansk region. His passing has left a profound impact on our community, as Roman was truly a remarkable individual whose kindness and strength touched the lives of everyone around him. We mourn the loss of such a bright spirit and hold his memory close to our hearts. “Roma was an incredibly kind-hearted individual, truly the soul of every gathering. His unwavering support made him someone everyone could count on, no matter the circumstances. Whenever help was needed, he was always there, ready to lend a hand. Roma approached life with a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic. What set him apart was his remarkable ability to live authentically, unburdened by others’ opinions, and to embrace each moment fully. He inspired those around him to do the same. Anyone fortunate enough to know him would undoubtedly speak of him with warmth and admiration, reflecting on what a genuinely wonderful person he was.”
Despite facing numerous challenges, Roman maintained a remarkable sense of positivity, never revealing just how tough things could become. His love for life was palpable, and he had a unique ability to find joy in the little things. His deep affection for children fueled dreams of having a family of his own one day, yet sadly, that dream remained unfulfilled. He held onto many aspirations for the future, each one a testament to the hope and warmth that defined his spirit, even as they went unrealized. He is survived by his loving parents, a younger sister, and two older brothers. In his honor, charity football matches are held to raise funds for our brave army.
There is a profound heartache when someone departs from this life before having the opportunity to truly live, create a family, and express to their loved ones just how much they mean to them.
